Anderson, Leith THE CHURCH FOR THE 20TH CENTURY

I read this book after reading "The Purpose Driven Church" by Rick Warren (see in this list). It is a great "counter-balance". Anderson gives advice that is appropriate for the existing church. He touches on many of the principles of Warren and helps us apply these things to the situation most of us are in. I encourage you to read the books as a combination.

Anderson, Leith WHEN GOD SAYS NO

I found this to be a very helpful book on that difficult subject of unanswered prayer. In this book Anderson goes into the many reasons answers to our prayer are delayed or denied. He shows that sometimes: God has something better, God's timing hasn't come yet, we are asking with wrong motives and so forth. The book is filled with fine illustrations.

Arterburn, Stephen and Fred Stoeker  EVERYMAN'S BATTLE

This is a wonderfully candid book about the problem of lust that pursues every man.   The book is written in a straightforward way to men but there is a section in each chapter addressed to the wives.  I like the practical nature of the book.  It made me think.  It gets a little "wordy" at times but still a book every man should read.

B

Batura, Paul J. GADZOOKS!

This book is an inside look at the life and leadership style of James Dobson. It is an affectionate, touching and very practical book. It's an easy read and you'll enjoy every minute. Every leader should read this book.ORDER THIS BOOK

Begg, Alistair MADE FOR HIS PLEASURE

Alistair Begg is featured on the radio program "Truth for Living". This is a very engaging book sub-titled "Ten Benchmarks of a Vital Faith". Begg covers: Spiritual fitness, Prayer, Sacrifice, Relationships, Vocation, Suffering, Holy Living, Intellectualism and Materialism, Humility and Evangelism. Each topic is related simply, with many personal illustrations to drive home his point. Begg is a skilled preacher but he sounds less like he is preaching and more like he is sharing his heart with you in this book. It's not a long book, it's easy reading and it's wonderfully stimulating. ORDER THIS BOOK

Begg, Alistair WHAT ANGELS WISH THEY KNEW

This book is written with the non-Chritian or the borderline Christian in mind but could be used for a new member or new believer class. Begg writes with wit, simplicity and clarity as he explains the essential truths of the Christian faith. He shows how "reasonable" Christianity is. A Wonderful book. ORDER THIS BOOK

Begg, Alistair THE HAND OF GOD

This is a wonderful book on the life of Joseph. I found Begg's work helpful in my series on Genesis but also very personally enriching. This is not the "same old sermons" on Joseph. This is fresh and insightful. Buy it and read it!

Blackaby, Henry and Claude King EXPERIENCING GOD

This is a bestseller for a reason. This is a sensible discourse on finding the will of God for your life. Blackaby states things clearly with lots of Biblical background. This wouldn't be a bad book for a group study. The best part of the book is the way it emphasizes God's active leading in our lives today.

Boice, James Montgomery WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE GOSPEL OF GRACE

I'll be honest, I love everything written by Boice. This is the last book Dr. Boice finished before he died.  It is a careful examination of the five "solas" of the Reformation.  These are the basic beliefs of Protestant Christianity . . . at least, they used to be the main tenets.  This book is a great introduction to these truths but also a good refresher course for those who are familiar with these vital principles. ORDER THIS BOOK

Boice, Jame Montgomery and Philip Graham Ryken THE DOCTRINES OF GRACE

This is the last book Dr. Boice was working on before he died.  The book is a sequel to the book above.  In this volume Boice and Ryken look at the doctrines that are most prominently called the distinctives of Calvinism.  Some might be turned off by that idea but Boice argues that the church has drifted from the doctrines that made it strong.  He argues that the powerlessness of the contemporary church is due to our focus on performance rather than theology; Our drifting to doctrines with man at the center rather than God at the center.  It's an excellent book.

Boice, J. Montgomery GENESIS

This three volume work by Boice was one of my most valuable resources in my sermon series on Genesis. Each volume contains sixty messages Boice used in his own congregation. The work is thorough, interesting, and very helpful to the student and preacher. ORDER THIS BOOK

Boice, J. Montgomery TWO CITIES, TWO LOVES

Boice writes this book in the pattern of Augustine's City of God. This is a highly readable and informative book that grapples with the question of a Christian's role in the secular world. Boice believes we have "sold out" to the secular society and calls us back to a true Christian witness. Very informative and challenging. This is not a "beginner" book but you don't have to have a degree in theology to understand it either. ORDER THIS BOOK

Boice, J. Montgomery PHILIPPIANS

This is the same style as Boice's books on Genesis (and John, Romans, and Psalms). There are 45 "messages" on Philippians that look at this rich book from a variety of perspectives. It's great exposition! BUY THIS BOOK

Bolton, Robert THE FOUR LAST THINGS: Death, Judgement, Hell, and Heaven

Another great Puritan book from Soli Deo Gloria. This book is short enough to enable anyone to read it and meaty enough for everyone to get something from it. I found myself terrified by the prospect of Hell and exhilarated by the chapter on Heaven.

Bridges, Jerry THE PURSUIT OF HOLINESS

I read a series of three books that impacted my theology greatly: Loving God by Charles Colson; The Holines of God by R.C. Sproul and this book. When read in combination the impact was astounding. Bridges writes in the style of a Pastor. Each lesson is like a Sunday School class that is filled with scriptural annotation. Sproul's approach is theological, Colson's book is anecdotal and that's why the three form a powerful teaching team. BUY THIS BOOK

Bridges, Jerry TRUSTING GOD

There aren't many books written about God's Providence and Sovereignty. Of the books I've seen, this is the best. Bridges seeks to present the Biblical teaching about God's control in our lives. He doesn't gloss over difficult issues but seeks to lay out the Scriptural truth and urges us to trust it. The many personal illustrations makes this a very warm yet powerful book. You will have to come back to this book again and again. It will help you relax in the break-neck pace of life. ORDER THIS BOOK

Bridges, Jerry TRANSFORMING GRACE

There were a number of good books on Grace written in the last few years. This was one of the first and perhaps best (along with Yancey and Swindoll). Again, Bridges concern for Biblical fidelity makes the book stand out. His understanding of grace (which we come to understand is constantly evolving) will help free your own heart to live with joyful gratitude. ORDER THIS BOOK

Brown, Stephen WHEN YOUR ROPE BREAKS

This is one of those books that I love giving to people who are going through tough times. Steve Brown has an "irreverence" about him that makes him refreshing. This is a book you will turn to over and over again. It's practical and helpful. ORDER THIS BOOK

Brown, Stephen WHEN BEING GOOD ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH

In this book Steve Brown talks about the wonder and blessing of grace. I thought the book was worth getting for the parable Steve gives in chapter two. I heard him tell this story in person and it changed my whole appreciation of grace. This is an important topic and Brown is extremely helpful. ORDER THIS BOOK

Brown, Stephen JUMPING HURDLES, HITTING GLITCHES, OVERCOMING SETBACKS

This is a book that everyone will love . . . .especially preachers. This is a book of stories and anecdotes. Some of them make you laugh and others will stir your soul. This is a good book to keep by the side of the bed and enjoy when you have only a few minutes. ORDER THIS BOOK

C

Case, Thomas A TREATISE OF AFFLICTIONS

Thomas Case (1598-1682) wrote a masterpiece here. The best part of the book are the 20 benefits of affliction that Case expounds. This is not easy reading but it sure is enlightening and enriching. This is a book that should be "savored" not simply read. Highly recommended.

Clinton, Tim BEFORE A BAD GOODBYE

This book by Word is a book from the President of the American Association of Christian Counselors. It's a great book to give to a couple going through a tough time in their marriage. It's practical and gives workable steps for healing. I also found it a very helpful book to read from a Pastoral standpoint.

Colson, Chuck LOVING GOD

This is a wonderful book. This is a straightforward book that calls us to a deeper walk with Christ. The book is easy to read because it is anecdotal (it tells stories). But the book is not "fluff". This book drove me to a deeper walk with Christ. At times I had to put the book down until the tears cleared. A wonderfully tender and instructive book. Everyone should read it. ORDER THIS BOOK

Colson, Chuck HOW THEN SHALL WE LIVE

I've heard that Colson calls this his magnum opus. The book addresses arguments posed to Christians regarding science, evolution and lots more. The book is not easy to read but worth working at. The early chapters on evolution would have made it worth the price of the book by itself.

Crabb, Larry THE PRESSURE'S OFF

This is a wonderfully thought-provoking book.  Crabb gets a little verbose in the middle of the book but if you read all the way to the end, his observations will change your entire approach to God.  Crabb argues that we need to seek God for who He is, not for what He can give us.  ORDER THIS BOOK

Cymbala, Jim FRESH FAITH

This follow up book to the wonderful Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire challenges us to trust God in a dynamic way in our daily living. It's an easy to read book. The stories drive home the point and the point is one we all need to hear. God can do the impossible . . . but we must believe.

D

Driscoll, Mark CONFESSIONS OF A REFORMISSION REV.

Driscoll in the Pastor of Mars Hill Church in Seattle Washington. Driscoll is part of the "emerging church" movement. Though I tend to scorn the latest church "fads", I found this book quite engaging and fun. The book chronicles Driscoll's experience of seeing the Mars Hill Church grow. If you are a Pastor there will be times when this book has you laughing so hard you will cry! Driscoll agrees that new methods are needed to reach new generations. Where he differs with the Emergent Church movement is his belief that the doctrines of Christianity do not need to be reworked . . . just the methods of conveying them. Driscoll learned that a church that targets just one age group isn't really a church at all . . . the church is trans-generational! He learned that people weren't lookling for a new Christianity . . .they were looking for a church that wasn't afraid of honest questions. I found it a very refreshing book. Driscoll is reformed in his theology, drawing much from the likes of John Piper. ORDER THIS BOOK

E

Evans, Tony THE PROMISE

This is the first book I've read that was written by Tony Evans a popular speaker at conferences around the country. This is a fairly thorough study of the Holy Spirit written with the average person in mind as his audience. Evans doesn't use difficult theological terms and explains issues of debate with remarkable clarity. It is a well-written book with lots of personal anecdotes. He manages to take a moderate position on most of the Holy Spirit controversies. This is a good introduction into the important work of the Holy Spirit.

F

Fabry, Chris AWAY WITH THE MANGER

This is a short little book that is written with wit and packs a powerful punch at the end. It's the story of one town's fight to keep the Manger in front of the Court House. This book will cause you to think about the tactics that we use to make an impact.

Finzel, Hans THE TOP TEN MISTAKES LEADERS MAKE

Finzel is the Executive Director of the Conservative Foreign Baptist Foreign Missionary Society. This is a practical book on being a good leader. The lessons are for anyone in any kind of a management position. His principles are applicable in the church. Finzel urges a humble leadership that focuses on people rather than paper, mentoring your successors and affirming those you work with. These are practical lessons learned "on the job".

G

Goettsche, Bruce and Rick DIFFICULT PEOPLE: Dealing With Those Who Drive You Crazy

This is my fourth book and Rick's first book.  The book is short and deals with the important issue of dealing with the conflict times that come to all relationships.  The book is intentionally short so it can be used in Leadership training and development (a good book for all Pastors to give to their leaders) and also for Sunday School or small group discussions.  There are questions at the end of each chapter to help facilitate discussion.  BUY THIS BOOK

Goettsche, Bruce JOY: FINDING IT; KEEPING IT

This is my third book and is based on the book of Philippians. Each chapter has study questions which makes the book ideal for personal or group study.  I think the book has a great deal to teach the new or seasoned believer. There are chapters that deal with theological issues and those that deal with the practical issues of life. I think you'll find it helpful.  BUY THIS BOOK

Goettsche, Bruce FAITH LESSONS: LESSONS IN FAITH FROM GENESIS

This is a book I'm especially fond of because I wrote it!  These 30 chapters are ideal for a 30 day journey through some of the man events and stories of Genesis. This is not a commentary. These are case studies. I look at the lives of various Biblical characters and draw practical lessons from them. I hope you'll find this book to be beneficial to your own growth and study.  BUY THIS BOOK

Goettsche, Bruce FINDING YOUR WAY THROUGH THE FOG

This fourteen chapter book focuses on how to stand in foggy times.  The first several chapters deal with issues such as prayer, false teaching and the true nature of the gospel.  The remaining chapters focus on practical issues that will help keep us on course.  Drawn from the book of Colossians.  Buy this book

Gregory, David DINNER WITH A PERFECT STRANGER

This is a little book that packs a wallop. This is a short story of a man who is asked to meet someone in a restaurant. The man turns out to be Jesus (or so He says). The man asks very honest questions and is given clear and concise answers. This is a great book to give to a non-believer or someone who is looking for answers. I encourage you to buy several copies to give to others.Buy this book

Gregory, David A DAY WITH A PERFECT STRANGER

This book has the same format as the previous book but this time Jesus sits next to the man's wife on a plane. Another engaging conversation and more (different) questions. It's a great two-pack. Buy this book

H

Hanegraaff, Hank COUNTERFEIT REVIVAL

This book has raised an outcry from the Health and Wealth movement (as did his previous book). In this book Hannegraff (of the Christian Research Institute) addresses the new phenomena of the Vineyard movement, the Toronto "Blessing" and other such things. Hannegraff gives exhaustive accounts of what is being taught by these teachers. He points out that many have sorely misinterpreted Jonathan Edwards (who they claim as their "standard bearer"). Edwards wrote against such things as this, says Hannegraff. In the last part of the book Hannegraff posits his explanation for the contemporary phenomena. Basically he sees it as a combination of peer pressure and the working of people into a mindless state through the singing of endless choruses over and over. It's a fascinating and troubling study at the same time. Hannegraff raises questions that we should all be concerned about. ORDER THIS BOOK

Hank Hanegraaff RESURRECTION

This is a book that I thought had great potential. It is expensive, short, and really doesn't have anything new to say. It's a good "starter book" on the resurrection and eternal life but if it is a topic you are familiar with . . . save your money. I suspect this will be the last Hanegraaff book I buy . . . they are "entry level" books.

Hank Hanegraaff THE FACE

This book discusses the issue of Evolution. Hanegraaff presents a clear outline of arguments against evolution. My recommendation . . . spend a couple more dollars and get Colson's book. Even if you only read the early chapters on evolution it will be a good investment. Sorry!

Horton, Michael WE BELIEVE: RECOVERING THE ESSENTIALS OF THE APOSTLE'S CREED

In this valuable work Michael Horton argues that we need clarity in what the church believes. He turns to the Apostle's Creed for the necessary essentials from which to build. At times the book is a little tedious (when doing historical and Biblical surveys) but is still valuable and important. ORDER THIS BOOK

Horton, Michael PUTTING AMAZING BACK INTO GRACE

This is a well written book that I think you could put into the hands of those in a membership class to explain clearly the reformation understanding of salvation. Today the emphasis is on our effort. We focus on the prayer, the behavior, the methods. In Horton's book he puts the credit for salvation where it justly should be, at the feet of God's amazing Grace. This is a terrific book. ORDER THIS BOOK

Hybels, Bill THE GOD YOU'RE LOOKING FOR

This book was a delightful surprise to me. I'm not sure what I expected but what I got was a delightful exposition on the attributes of God. This is a wonderfully fresh approach to this subject that is usually so academic that it is boring. Hybels makes the attributes of God practical while not compromising God's attributes at all. This is a great book for new believers but also a refreshing book for the seasoned saint. It's not difficult reading but it isn't shallow "fluff" either. I think it is one of Bill's best. It is as good or better than DESCENDING INTO GREATNESS. ORDER THIS BOOK

Hybels, Bill DESCENDING INTO GREATNESS

Bill has written a number of books but this one is among the best. This book is on the par of Chuck Swindoll's IMPROVING YOUR SERVE (see below). It emphasizes the call to service in the Christian life. Hybels begins in life and then moves back to scripture whereas Swindoll goes the other way around. These books read in combination would be powerful instruction in the servant mentality called for by Christ. ORDER THIS BOOK

Hybels, Bill TOO BUSY NOT TO PRAY

This is a wonderfully practical and enlightening book on prayer. Hybels speaks to the area that many of us struggle with in our life: prayer. This is a good group discussion book because it contains study questions. ORDER THIS BOOK

J

Jeremiah, David MY HEART'S DESIRE

This book is on the topic of worship.  It's not a deep discussion but it is a good introduction to Biblical worship.  I didn't find many new ideas in the book but still enjoyed the read.  ORDER THIS BOOK

K

Kennedy, D. James SOLVING BIBLE MYSTERIES

This is a wonderful book by D. James Kennedy.  In this volume Kennedy takes a look at 13 mysteries of the Christian faith: "Does Genesis contradict Science?"; "Are we Saved by Faith or Works?"; "The Trinity"; "Can a Christian Fall from Grace?" "Predestination and Free Will"; "The Virgin Birth" and others. This is a solid work but it is not "heavy".  In other words, Kennedy gives solid and scholarly answers to these issues but he doesn't drone on for page after page doing so.  Some of the illustrations are priceless. ORDER THIS BOOK

Kistler, Don A SPECTACLE UNTO GOD The Life and Death of Christopher Love

Christopher Love was a Welsh Preacher who lived in the 1600's. He was unjustly arrested. This book contains the letters of Christopher Love from jail. The letters are touching, instructive, and incredibly moving. You can get this book through Soli Deo Gloria Publishing. (This book is only available through Soli Deo Gloria)

L

LaHaye, Tim POWER OF THE CROSS

This is an enjoyable book to read. The book begins with a discussion of the importance of the cross of Christ. And then the majority of the book is about people who's lives have been changed due to their encounter with the reality of the cross of Christ. In the last couple of chapters Dr. LaHaye gets a little "preachy" but what he says is pretty good. This book will help you appreciate the "old rugged cross" once again. ORDER THIS BOOK

Lloyd-Jones, D. Martyn GOD THE FATHER, GOD THE SON

This incredible volume is the first of three which records messages Lloyd-Jones gave on Christian Doctrine. This is an engaging way to develop theological roots. It's a great book to read devotionally. I read one chapter every morning. Take your time. Underline freely. Think deeply. Enjoy the journey. This is a treasure on my shelves. ORDER THIS BOOK

Lloyd-Jones, D. Martyn GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT

This is volume two (of a projected 3) on doctrine. Again the Doctor is thorough and addresses all issues with fairness, thoroughness and readability. Pick this up after you finish volume 1. You will not be disappointed. There is no dip in quality from the first volume. ORDER THIS BOOK

Lloyd-Jones, D. Martyn THE CHURCH AND THE LAST THINGS

Are you tired of books that dogmatically tell you everything that is going to happen in the end times? Are you looking for a book that uses caution in place of sensationalism? This is the book. In this book Lloyd-Jones gives various interpretations of the end times but does it in a scholarly and understandable way. One of my favorite lines is this: "a true study of the end times should lead us to humility rather than arrogance." This is the third volume of the three volume Great Doctrines of the Bible. What a wonderful set of books. This was not like reading dry theology . . . it was engaging, interesting, enlightening. ORDER THIS BOOK

Lucado, Max COME THIRSTY

This was one of the better Lucado books.  Again, it is best to buy this used or on sale because it isn't very long.  However, Max does what only Max can do: create pictures that enable us to grasp profound truth in a new way.

Lucado, Max A LOVE WORTH GIVING

In this book Max examines 1 Corinthians 13.  As always, Max has a way of turning a familiar subject so that you can see it in a new light.  This book is no exception.  My objection to the book (as with every new book from Max) is that the book is short (168 pages), contains lots of white space and many title pages.  In other words, the actual book is only 135-140 pages. The $22.00 retail price is outrageous.  Get the book used or borrow one from a friend.  ORDER THIS BOOK

Lucado, Max NO WONDER THEY CALL HIM THE SAVIOR

This is the first Max Lucado book I ever read. What a delightful journey. In this book Max looks at the last week of Jesus' life. His reflections on the words from the cross are masterful. I have quoted parts of this book during sermons, funerals and in lots of conversations with friends. Don't read this one without your highlighter! ORDER THIS BOOK

Lucado, Max IN THE GRIP OF GRACE

This book is a gentle study of the first eight chapters of the book of Romans. This is more of a "study" than other books by Max. The same conversational style is present but chapters are longer and more "meaty". It's good to see Lucado "stretch". A good study of a vital New Testament book. My disappointment was that Max didn't carry on to chapters 9-16. ORDER THIS BOOK

Lucado , Max GOD'S INSPIRATIONAL PROMISES

This is a delightful little book that is large on content. The format is simple on the left page are God's promises from the Bible. On the right is a powerful quote from one of Max's books followed by a prayer of application. This is a great book for morning quiet time or perfect for the bathroom. If you have never read one of Max's books it's a good "taste" of Max Lucado. If you are a frequent reader it is a wonderful walk through some favorite memories. This is a great gift book. ORDER THIS BOOK

Lucado, Max THE APPLAUSE OF HEAVEN

This is one of my favorite Max Lucado books. Another one of those books that was a delightful and uplifting journey through the Word of God. The last chapter leaves you with such a vivid picture that it is worth the whole price of the book (but don't read it first!). When I finished I felt like I was saying good-bye to a good friend. ORDER THIS BOOK

Lucado, Max THE GREAT HOUSE OF GOD

I must admit that the idea of another book on the Lord's Prayer didn't seem all that interesting to me. However, this is not just another book on the Lord's Prayer. As always, Max takes a recognized jewel and turns it in the light so that we see colors and a brilliance we never saw before. A delightful book. I was sad when I finished the book because I was sorry the journey was over. ORDER THIS BOOK

Lucado, Max JUST LIKE JESUS

I didn't enjoy this book as much as I did some of Max's other books. It is written in the usual Lucado style of a story-teller. The theme of the book is simple: "God love you just the way you are, but he refuses to leave you that way. He wants you to be Just Like Jesus." The book calls us to a more complete discipleship. The book is a good read but the experienced Lucado reader may be disappointed. ORDER THIS BOOK

Lucado, Max WHEN CHRIST COMES

This is a book that talks about Heaven and the second coming. If you're looking for a discussion of dates and sequence this is not a book you want. This is more like the style Max is known for . . . conversational with lots of great stories. I am beginning to feel that Max is being stretched too far and his books are a little more rushed to the printer. That's too bad. Still better than most books you will read but I didn't think it was as good as some of the others.

Lucado, Max HE CHOSE THE NAILS

This book is another reflection on the cross of Christ. As always, Max writes in a warm and practical way that shows the relevance of what happened on Calvary. My gripe with this book is that my hardcover copy is only 150 pages long, the print is big and there is lots of "white space". The book really isn't a great value for the money. This is a book that you are paying for the name more than the content. Wait for it to come out on paperback and then read it.  When you check out the titles at Amazon.com . . . make sure you are buying the book and not one of the many study guides that are marketed with the book.

Lutzer, Erwin THE DAVINCI DECEPTION

With plans to release the movie, "The DaVinci Code" in 2006 this is a valuable book to read.  Lutzer points out how the movie is a very poor attempt at a historical novel.  The DaVinci Code sounds convincing but isn't even close to being accurate.  Read up and be prepared because many will watch the movie (as they have read the book) and assume it is true.

Lutzer, Erwin WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE

in this engaging book Lutzer draws some distinctions between being judgmental and being discerning.  There are some things we are to judge.  Our society wants us to believe that Jesus didn't want us ever to make judgments.  That's wrong.  Lutzer does a good job of driving home his points.

Lutzer, Erwin  ALL ONE BODY-WHY DON'T WE AGREE?

In this book Lutzer takes on some of the "hot-potatos" of the Christian faith: The Doctrine of Mary, Eternal Security, Predestination, The Apocrypha and much more.  He explains both sides of the argument and helps us come to an understanding of the issues.  I thought it was a very fair and knowledgeable treatment.

M

MacArthur, John F. THE GLORY OF HEAVEN

There aren't many good books on the topic of Heaven. This book's best feature are the great sermons on Heaven from great preachers of the past. MacArthur is thorough but I didn't find the book particularly well-written or informative which made it hard to read.

MacArthur, John F. RECKLESS FAITH

Sometimes I find MacArthur exhausting because of his continual spotlighting of error. This book is important however. In this book MacArthur deals with a couple of primary issues. The chief issue is the move toward an alliance of Protestants and Catholics (he's against it). MacArthur raises the issues that were the cause of the Reformation. These are issues too often forgotten in our quest for "oneness". The other issue addressed is the issue of the new strain of the Health and Wealth movement that has laughing, animal sounds, new prophets and more. MacArthur shows were most of these groups are built on a faulty exegesis and are being led into grave error.

McCullough, Donald THE TRIVIALIZATION OF GOD

McCullough raises some important questions in this short (150 pages) book. The comments on true worship are really worth the price of the book. This is a crucial issue in the church today as we seek to make God in "our image"

McManus, Erwin   SEIZING YOUR DIVINE MOMENT

McManus is one of the leaders is what is being called the Emergent Church movement.  He has a bold approach in his discipleship that is refreshing.  He has a great self-depricating sense of humor.  This is a good read and a valuable read.

McTavish, T.J. A THEOLOGICAL MISCELLANY

This book is really written by our friend Richard L. Leonard.  This is just a fun book to have.  It is filled with little snips of information that you always wanted to know.  It tells you the 12 stations of the cross, the five points of Calvinism, the men in the Bible with no hair, basic beliefs of world religions . . . .all kinds of stuff.  When I first picked up the book in the bookstore I just thumbed through it.  After a little while I realized that this book would be a valuable resource to have.  I bought it.  BUY THIS BOOK

Manning, Brennan  THE RAGMUFFIN GOSPEL

This is a popular book for a reason.  It seems like Manning is merely rambling most of the time yet in the rambling there is a point that suddenly hits you as you read.  It's sneaky in it's power.  It's a pretty easy read and a delightful adventure to boot.  Manning is captivated by grace..

N

Nelson, Tommy A LIFE WELL LIVED

This is a very readable book on the book of Ecclesiastes. Nelson writes with an engaging style and he does a great job taking a sometimes difficult book to read and making it clear. ORDER THIS BOOK

O

Ortberg, John GOD IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK

This is an engaging and fun book.  Ortberg challenges us to live the adventure of walking with Jesus day by day.  I found the book to be very practical, easy to read, and some of the illustrations are very powerful.  ORDER THIS BOOK

Ortberg, John EVERYBODY IS NORMAL UNTIL YOU GET TO KNOW THEM

This is another fun book from John Ortberg.  Ortberg examines the issue of getting along with others.  He refers to the Bible and much contemporary research.  His humor is intact.  It's a good book for personal or group study. ORDER THIS BOOK

Ortberg, John IF YOU WANT TO WALK ON WATER YOU'VE GOT TO GET OUT OF THE BOAT

This is a delightful book. John Ortberg takes the account of Peter walking on the water and looks at it from many different angles. The insights are valuable.  There is an honesty about Ortberg which makes him captivating. He has a sense of humor that strikes when you least expect it.  I learned a great deal from this book, I got lots of great quotes and I really enjoyed reading the book. You will too. ORDER THIS BOOK

Ortberg, John THE LIFE YOU'VE ALWAYS WANTED

This is a book which focuses on the disciplines of the Christian faith.  In this book John not only talks about solitude, slowing, reflection, prayer, simplicity and so forth, he is also careful to make sure that we understand that the purpose of these disciplines is not to make us pious but to open us up to a deeper relationship with God.  John's sense of humor is there and his wonderful insights are there as well. You'll like this book too. ORDER THIS BOOK

Owen, John THINKING SPIRITUALLY (Great Christian Classics condensation)

This little book is surely not as profound as the full text version, but, if you are like me, you may never have read that version. This is a small book but the message comes through. I missed the relentless precision of Owen. This little book has whet my appetite for the "real thing".

P

Peterson, Eugene THE CONTEMPLATIVE PASTOR

What a wonderfully refreshing book this was. Peterson speaks with the heart of a Pastor. I especially liked his philosphy of staying in a church that never had more members than he could remember by name. He writes as a Pastor of a single-Pastor charge. A couple of chapters were a little more mystical than I could grasp at this point. But the others . . . .they were helpful, invigorating and enlightening. Highly recommended.

Peretti, Frank THE VISITATION

You can tell by looking at this list that I don't read a lot of novels. This was a good book to read. As always Peretti weaves a great story with a powerful message. The warning in the book is to be careful of who we follow. The book deals with a town who follows a leader because of the "way he makes us feel" (Hedonism) and because of the difference this leader makes in the community (pragmatism). The questions raised are good ones and the warning sounded is important.

Peretti, Frank THE WOUNDED SPIRIT

This is Peretti's first non-fiction book. The book should be read by every teacher, leader, student, and parent. The book is the honest account of Peretti's tormented childhood. He tells his story (which most of us can relate to on one level or another) and then relates it to events such as Columbine. Peretti has some opinions and ideas on how to "stop the madness".  THIS IS A MUST READ!  ORDER THIS BOOK

Piper, Don 90 MINUTES IN HEAVEN

I read this book because someone I knew with a terminal illness was reading it. To be honest, I was disappointed. Piper tells his incredible story from accident to rehabilitation. However, the book draws you in because of an interest in what this man saw while he was "in Heaven". There is only one short section in the book that actually tells that part of the story. His time in Heaven is really secondary to the rigors of rehabilitation. The book is interesting but it is not what you think. Do I think Piper really was in Heaven? I don't know. ORDER THIS BOOK

Preston, John THE PURITANS ON PRAYER

This book contains works by John Preston, Nathaniel Vincent and Samuel Lee. This is some of the best material on prayer I have ever read. None of the fluffly "three steps to powerful praying". This is all meat! One comment I will never forget (paraphrasing) "since Jesus died to give us the opportunity to talk with the Father, when we do not pray we show that we despise the cross." Wow! A transforming book. Soli Deo Gloria published something extra special here. This is THE book I would recommend first on prayer. (This book is only available through Soli Deo Gloria)

Pritchard, G.A. WILLOW CREEK SEEKER SERVICES

In this book Mr. Pritchard gives a very thorough explanation of the approach to ministry taken by Willow Creek Community Church. The last third of the book is an evaluation of the "new way of doing church". The research was thorough even though the judgments are made on one year's worth of teaching at the church. Pritchard raises some important questions about the management approach to Christianity. It was an interesting book for those interested in the Willow Creek/ Saddleback phenomena.

Pritchard, Ray HE'S GOD AND WE'RE NOT

I love this book.  Ray gives seven important "laws" of the spiritual life.  These are simple and straightforward truths that are explained well.  We used the book for a Sunday School class and everyone enjoyed it.  BUY THIS BOOK

Pritchard, Ray AN ANCHOR FOR THE SOUL

I like and respect Ray Pritchard. This little book is worth reading and buying to give to your friends.  It is a simple book that is geared to explain the Christian faith in terms that people understand.  Excellent!  ORDER THIS BOOK

Pritchard, Ray IN THE SHADOW OF THE CROSS

In this book Ray looks at the seven last words of Jesus and then reflects on the impact the cross made. It's a good study.  The seven last words were great. The last half of the book was valuable but at times the theology was a little difficult to read (although it was worth the effort). ORDER THIS BOOK

S

Sande, Ken THE PEACEMAKER

This is a great book that is designed to help us as we seek to resolve personal conflicts.  The book is extremely practical and thoroughly Biblical. It is not hard to read and the message is one that will change the way you deal with difficult times and people in your own life.  A book everyone should read.  BUY THIS BOOK

Sproul, R.C. SAVED FROM WHAT?

This is a small book that contains a discussion of justification.  In a typically Sproul fashion is it thorough and sometimes seems weighted down.  If you are a frequent Sproul reader, much of this material will already be familiar to you from other books. ORDER THIS BOOK

Sproul, R.C. THE HOLINESS OF GOD

This is the book on which R.C. builds the Ligionier ministry. This is also one of the most influential books of my life. Sproul brings the issue of God's holiness to center stage. His description of Isaiah 6 is marvelous and will turn this passage into one of the most loved passages of your life. This is the place to start reading with Sproul. A book that should be read by every believer! ORDER THIS BOOK

Sproul, R.C. One Holy Passion

This is a book on the attributes of God. R.C. presents approaches the subject with a theological freshness. This is not just a recitation of the "omni's-". You'll learn some new words here (as you always do with Sproul) but the journey will be refreshing and delightful. Not difficult but not superficial either.

Sproul, R.C. CHOSEN BY GOD

Many people have heard about "a doctrine of predestination" but they have never really heard it explained with the caricature that usually vastly distorts the doctrine. In this book Sproul passionately and effectively explains and argues the "wonderfully comforting" doctrine of predestination. I found this book to be stirring, enlightening and a great great help in my Christian understanding and living. ORDER THIS BOOK

Sproul, R.C. NOT A CHANCE

This is a meaty book but for those willing to make the effort this is a great book. This is a book that takes on the notion that things happen by "chance". Sproul makes the point with flawless logic. The first two chapters are a little on the slow side . . . but persevere, it's worth it. ORDER THIS BOOK

Sproul, R.C. THE INVISIBLE HAND

I'm deeply indebted to R.C. for molding my theological perspective. This is a book that tackles the important subject of the Providence of God. It's an important issue that has long been neglected by contemporary Christians. There is no doctrine more comforting than this one. However, I don't believe the book is up to the usual Sproul quality. The last half of the book is marvelous but the first half is very slow. I benefitted from reading the book but not as much as I had hoped. ORDER THIS BOOK

Sproul, R.C. GRACE UNKNOWN

This is a much needed book by Sproul. It is also very well written. The book is an explanation of "Reformed Theology". Sproul shows the key elements of Reformed (or Reformation) Theology to be: it's God-centered-ness, it's devotion to God's Word as absolute authority and it's adherence to Justification by Faith ALONE. Sproul then goes on into a helpful summary of the T.U.L.I.P. summary of the five points of John Calvin's theology. Sproul is often militant in his writing style but he is not so here. He presents his position with clarity and grace. This is a vital work, but it is not an "easy read". (Though it is not particularly difficult for those with some exposure to theological reflection.) ORDER THIS BOOK

Sproul, R.C. FAITH ALONE

This is a book that addresses the key doctrine of Justification by faith. Many people today say they believe in justification by faith but there understanding is NOT the doctrine of the Reformation. This is an important study that addresses the problems still existing between Catholics and Protestants. This is a key doctrine in our faith. Sproul will sharpen your understanding. ORDER THIS BOOK

Sproul, R.C. WILLING TO BELIEVE

This book is a sequel to GRACE UNKNOWN. In this book Sproul presents the various views in the Free Will/ Election debate. Again, this is a more scholarly book but is well written. Sproul does not apologize for his position but is very fair in presenting the opinions of those who disagree with him. He is not intending to rebute those who disagree with him . . . he is seeking to bring understanding to our differences. In Fact, this is the greatest weakness of the book . . . most would not respond with such charity to Dr. Sproul's position. ORDER THIS BOOK

Sproul, R.C. THE LAST DAYS ACCORDING TO JESUS

R.C Sproul is my favorite theologian and one of my favorite writers. But I thought this book was a waste of money. (Sorry, R.C.) I expected a clear and cogent explanation of R.C.'s understanding of the end times teachings. What I got was lots of quotes and an explanation of someone else's view of the end times. I'm not even going to provide a link for you to order this book. Buy the Lloyd-Jones book listed above instead.

Sproul, R.C. RENEWING YOUR MIND

This is a book that discusses the Apostle's Creed. Sproul is known for his insightful depth. He doesn't disappont here. This is an older book . . . but a good one. If you are interested in mining the depts of this great statement of faith by the book in paperback and keep your marker ready to underline the great quotes.

Stafford, Tim KNOWING THE FACE OF GOD

In this book Tim Stafford takes us on a wonderfully honest search for intimacy with God. Like most of us, Stafford admits that sometimes his faith is "plastic" and lacking intimacy with the Almighty. It's a journey that is well worth taking.

Strobel, Lee THE CASE FOR THE REAL JESUS

This is such an important book for our day. In this text Strobel examines various questions related to the nature and character of Christ. He confronts some of the contemporary theories that Jesus never claimed to be God; and the notion that the story of Christ in the gospels is a distortion. This is a little more scholarly a book (it's a little more difficult to read) than the others but most of the chapters are still well within the reach of anyone who questions the reliability of the Bible's picture of Christ. I thought the chapter on the resurrection and fulfilled prophecy was going to be a rehash of what was written in other books. It was not! The person of Jesus is the cornerstone issue of Chrsitianity today. Christians must not be deceived by those who want to distort the Jesus of Scripture. ORDER THIS BOOK

Strobel, Lee THE CASE FOR CHRIST

To be honest, I thought this would be another one of those difficult to read books on Christian apologetics. It wasn't. This is an engaging, interesting, throrough compeling book. In the book Strobel raises "reporter like" questions regarding the validity of the Christian faith and goes to experts to find the answers. This is a book I'm going to buy ten or more copies of to give to my friends. It is a book that every Christian should not only have on their shelves . . . they should also read the book!! ORDER THIS BOOK

Strobel, Lee GOD'S OUTRAGEOUS CLAIMS

I was concerned that this was going to be another of those books where Strobel imagines what God would say to contemporary figures. (A dangerous task, me thinks) However, it was not that way at all. This was a fun book to read. It was practical and relevant. Might even make a good Sunday School Class study book. Here's a sample of some of the outrageous claims:"There's Freedom in Forgiving Your Enemies"; "A Dose of Doubt May Strengthen Your Faith"; "God's Rules on Sex Can Liberate Us". ORDER THIS BOOK

Swindoll, Charles THE FINISHING TOUCH

This is a year's worth of daily readings. This book becomes like a cherished friend as you enjoy the random (but not pointless) thoughts of the President of Dallas Theological Seminary. Chuck writes where people live. This book continues the style of writing found in his earlier works: GROWING STRONG, STRESS FRACTURES, COME BEFORE WINTER. A nice book to read at bed time or to begin a day. ORDER THIS BOOK

Swindoll, Charles LIVING ABOVE THE LEVEL OF MEDIOCRITY

This is a delightful book by master preacher Charles Swindoll. Chuck calls for excellence in our living. One of my favorite statements was this: "God calls us to live and soar like eagles yet most of us choose to live like Turkeys!" Throughout the book Check spotlights various Biblical passages and draws his ever-practical lessons from these texts. ORDER THIS BOOK

Swindoll, Charles IMPROVING YOUR SERVE

I've read most of Chuck's books (put Charles Swindoll in the search window above and look at the list of his books) and this is one of my favorites. In this book, Swindoll challenges us to be servants. He talks about different ways to develop a servant heart. Great reading and good for a class or Bible Study. ORDER THIS BOOK

Swindoll, Charles JOSEPH

This is one of Chuck's popular books on personalities in the Bible. This is a typical Swindoll book. It has lots of practical application and good scholarship. Personally, I felt the material lacked any sense of "newness". I would recommend Alistair Begg's book. Caution: If you have heard Chuck's tapes on Joseph from Insight for Living . . .the book is a condensed version of those messages. I liked the tapes better.
Swindoll, Charles Esther

This is another of those "Biographical Books". I enjoyed this book. Part of this is because I have read little on Esther. This helped put all the pieces together for me. It would be a valuable resources if you were doing a study in Esther.

Swindoll, Charles DROPPING YOUR GUARD

In this volume Swindoll pleas for authenticity in our relationships with each other. As always, the book is Biblical, practical and filled with wit. ORDER THIS BOOK

Swindoll, Charles STRENGTHENING YOUR GRIP

This book is part of the trilogy (see two titles above). In this book Chuck encourages us to live with purpose and direction in an aimless world. Again, based in Scripture with lots of practical lessons. BUY THIS BOOK

Swindoll, Charles THE TALE OF THE TARDY OX CART

One of the trademarks of Charles Swindoll is his great illustrations. This book is filled with indexed stories. Many of these are from his previous writings and some are from other sources. Lots of good stuff here for preachers and writers. ORDER THIS BOOK

T

Tripp, Tedd SHEPHERDING A CHILD'S HEART

This is a book that was recommended to me at the Reformation and Revival Conference in 1996. The book sat on my shelf for several months but after reading it will be a book that I recommend to every parent. Tripp urges parents to cultivate the heart of the child. He rightly observes that we are almost exclusively concerned with the external behavior of our children. His tips are practical and very challenging. I was convicted and hopefully changed forever. You can order the book by calling 1-800-338-1445 (Shepherd Press)

V

Venning, Ralph (Thomas Menton, Joseph Caryl, John Ball) THE PURITANS ON LOVING ONE ANOTHER

This little book from Soli Deo Gloria is a wonderful treatise on Christian Love. It is a penetrating look at how we should love one another . . . as only the Puritans can do it. Great reading with many insights you won't find elsewhere. (This book is only available through Soli Deo Gloria)"

W

Wangerin, Walter Jr. PAUL: A NOVEL

This is a fanciful book that seeks to take the historical record of the life of the Apostle Paul and "put some flesh on it." The work is historical fiction. It is based on the Bible but Wangerin adds fictional "behind the scenes" views of Paul's life and the life of his time.  It's quite an enjoyable read.  BUY THIS BOOK

Wangerin, Walter Jr. THE BOOK OF GOD

This is a "historical fiction" based on the Old Testament through the Gospels.  Obviously, this book is a huge undertaking.  Because of the size of the material Wangerin doesn't have the time to develop his characters as he does in PAUL. For the most part you will find the Biblical Story told with additional color. BUY THIS BOOK

Warren, Rick THE PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE

This is not a particularly profound book even though it is wildly popular.  It is a good overview of Christian discipleship.  It may be one of those books you should read (perhaps you could borrow a copy) because everyone else is reading it.  I didn't find it particularly "life changing".  BUY THIS BOOK

Warren, Rick THE PURPOSE DRIVEN CHURCH

This is a stimulating book written by the Pastor of Saddleback Community Church in California. Warren discusses the philosophy behind their "seeker-sensitive" church. The practical ideas and sound philosophy make the book a valuable resource for whatever kind of church you may be a part of. I found the book refreshing, stimulating and it helped me re-orient my thinking about the church. ORDER THIS BOOK

Wright, Norman WHY DID THIS HAPPEN TO ME?

This is really a very helpful book. Wright takes on tough issues such as grief, tragedy and some of the awful things that happen in the world. It is practical and could be given to someone going through a time of crisis or used for personal enrichment. It is a great book to sharpen your "crisis care" skills. An easy . . . but good . . read.

Wright, Norman COMMUNICATION: KEY TO YOUR MARRIAGE

We used this book for an adult Sunday School Class. The book is older but the principles are timeless. It's a good book to give as a wedding present, to read for your own marriage, or to study with a group.

Y

Yacconelli, Michael  MESSY SPIRITUALITY

The Late founder of Youth Specialties has written this book not for kids but for the serious Christian.  At times you will laugh out loud at Yaconelli's engaging style.  At other times you will tear up as you realize the message of grace that oozes through his pages.  This is an easy read but you won't want to read it quickly.  You'll choose to savor the pages.  Yaconelli will take some old truths and turn them just a little so that you can see their beauty in a whole new way.

Yancey, Phillip PRAYER: DOES IT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE?

Phillip Yancey will make you think. In this book Yancey has written a book on prayer that is different than all the books you've probably read on the subject. Yancey asks the honest questions that you and I ask but refuses to settle for trite and simple answers. This is one of those books I need to read again. ORDER THIS BOOK

Yancey, Phillip The Jesus I Never Knew

I originally picked up this book because it had won awards and played to rave reviews. However, when I began to read it I thought I was beginning "another re-telling of the Gospels". I was wrong. Yancey goes through the pivotal moments of Jesus' life but does so with a "new eye". He turns the diamond of Christ's light in ways that enable us to see new and brilliant colors. He takes us behind the scenes and into the thoughts and feelings of those present. He also asks pertinent questions that relate the events of Christ's life with the events of our life. I enjoyed traveling with Phillip Yancey in this book. I was sorry for the journey to end . . . .but then again, maybe it has only begun. ORDER THIS BOOK

Yancey, Phillip, WHAT'S SO AMAZING ABOUT GRACE

This is a tremendous book that looks at this cardinal tenet of Christian Faith. Yancey points out that grace is largely misunderstood and points to the many practical implications for living. We've read lots of books about grace lately . . . this is the best. Yancey takes grace beyond the normal and comfortable boundaries we are used to. This is a probing, deeply penetrating, yet engaging and interesting book. The chapters relating to grace and forgiveness and the one on Homosexuality I found particularly convicting. I immediately went out and bought several copies of this book to give to my friends! Warning. . . the first couple chapters are a little slow . . . hang in there! ORDER THIS BOOK

Z

Zacharias, Ravi RECAPTURE THE WONDER

This is a book about an important issue: the heart of worship.  I found the book riveting at times and very slow at other times.  It would have been excellent as a shorter work.  I'd be hesitant to buy it at full price.  Better to borrow it from a church library or from a friend.

Zacharias, Ravi, CRIES OF THE HEART

In this book Ravi Zacharias takes on the difficult issue of suffering. He does so as a defender of the faith. This makes the book unique. I heard the "book on tape" and read the book. My recommendation . . . buy the book on tape. More illustrations and it flows much better.
